Living up to God's standards...

"Be holy for I am holy"
1 peter 1:16
.
Does anyone feel overwhelmed as I do by this command from God? It's such a high calling...Yet I feel like I'm struggling and working through something all the time. Failures are a regular, usual occurence. I'm thankful for the future promise that we will one day be like Christ, but I feel overwhelmed by "walk worthy of your calling" knowing that the standard is set by a most Holy God and knowing that on earth I will always struggle with sin. I feel discouraged and frustrated by my sin.
.
Any thoughts, encouragements, comments on this??
.
.
Let my cry come before You, O Lord;
Give me understanding according to Your word.
Let my supplication come before You;
Deliver me according to Your word.
My lips shall utter praise,
For You teach me Your statues.
My tongue shall speak of Your word,
For all Your commandments are righteousness.
Let Your hand become my help,
For I have chosen Your precepts,
I long for Your salvation, O Lord,
And Your law is my delight.
Let my soul live, and it shall praise You;
And let Your judgments help me.
I have gone astray like a lost sheep;
Seek Your servant,
For I do not forget Your commandments.
Psalm 119:169-176

    Well, b-dawg (I got it right), we are called to live a holy life and it is not just a high standard, but it is the highest standard. I know that in spite of our sin, that standard seems impossible, but consider the analogy from Jeremiah 2.

    We must drink from the fountain of living water in order to be completely satisfied. We often plunge our faces into the cisterns of this world and thus commit a great offense before God. But we can repent of our two evils (rejecting God and turning to something else) and return to the fountain. That ever-flowing, life-giving fountain will never dry up and will never be denied us.

    We can rejoice that we can have unlimited access to the fountain of delights.

    Hey Bekah. How's your summer?

    I've often thought about this command. It was one of the first passages that I really truly studied. There have been times when I've erred on the side of "puritanical" legalism and ascetism, and there have been times where I've just thought of it as a nice, idealic, yet unattainable concept. While both are somewhat true: that we are to deny our flesh and sin's call in order to be holy, and yet we know we will never fully be one hundred percent perfectly holy this side of Heaven; it's more than just this. It's like Micah said-- striving every day for the highest standard.

    But here's the greatest thing that gets me stoke about this passage-- I always connect this passage with 2 Corinthians 5:21, which says "For our sake He made Him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God." In a sense, through the amazing work of Justification, we already stand holy before God, "as He is holy." It's already been taken care of. That which we could never do is already done for us. And while we should most definitely follow Luke 9:23 and deny ourselves daily and follow Christ (and thereby pursue holiness), we rest easy in knowing that He has bestowed His standing of holiness upon us.

    I'm sorry, I usually don't leave massively long comments like this, but this is one of my favorite subjects; because a right understanding of it totally abolishes the temptation to live a legalistic form of Christianity.

    Anyway, like I said, how's your summer?
